Pregnancy & COVID-19 Vaccination

Pregnancy status at the time of COVID-19 vaccination did not affect the effectiveness of mRNA vaccines in a study from Norway. Among nearly 20,000 participants, 54% of women received 2 doses of the BNT162b2 vaccine, 16% received 2 doses of the mRNA-1273 vaccine, and 30% received 1 dose of an mRNA vaccine. Adjusted hazard ratios for a positive SARS-CoV-2 test were not significantly different among any of the groups of pregnant or postpartum women compared with women who were neither pregnant nor postpartum. Findings were similar for the 2 vaccines and during the delta and omicron phases of the pandemic.

“These results are reassuring, and combined with the increased risk of severe COVID-19 among pregnant women, and the probable passive protection of the newborn, gives further support to the importance of vaccination of pregnant women,” the authors conclude.
